Teach me, O Lord
“Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.” Ps. 119:33
There are many people who are considered experts at their jobs. They have spent decades studying, researching, and working to be the very best in their respective fields. They have multiple degrees, and having a five minute conversation with them will demonstrate just how much of an expert they are. They have made it their life’s work to know all that can be known and to put that knowledge into practice.
Consider those who are recognized by their achievements or knowledge. Albert Einstein is known to be one of the most influential and intelligent people in history. Known as the father of the theory of relativity, he won the Nobel Prize in physics and is most known for the famous equation, E=mc2. Benjamin Franklin is another popular figure, specifically in American history. Not only was he one of the founding fathers of the United States, but he was also an inventor. He invented the lightning rod and bifocal glasses. Even today, there isn’t a shortage of people who are considered to be geniuses or very influential. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Jordan B. Peterson is one of the greatest minds of our day, as he has risen in fame in the last six years. But these, with all of their knowledge, skill, and expertise, are not all-knowing. None of us are, and the Scriptures remind us of that.
The Psalmist repeatedly asks the Lord to teach him His statutes, as that is a theme not only in this Psalm but throughout the Psalms as a whole. As believers, we will never reach a point in our lives where we have arrived, so to speak. There is always something for us to learn from the Lord. What the Bible calls us to do specifically is to be taught by the statutes and commandments of the Lord. We may know a lot about the Bible, read through the Bible every year, and even memorize it all, but we will always have to be taught by those same statutes and commandments continually. His law is not burdensome; in fact it is right, pure, and a delight to those who follow Him. Therefore, we should always be looking to God’s Word for “teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16). It is only by His Word that believers persevere, have hope, and find life. Even the brightest minds in history were still limited in their knowledge. No matter our field of expertise, we are to humble ourselves before the Lord and have a teachable spirit all of our days.
What has the Lord taught you recently? What understanding or joy have you found in His Word to make you praise Him all the more? Make this your verse your prayer today, and ask the Lord to develop a teachable spirit within you.
